OUR DESIGNER
Birgit Brockbals designs minimal outerwear with purpose, in wool and other natural materials. For her, design begins with perception: with questions about how people live, what they carry with them and what they show of themselves.
THE APPROACH
She works with volume and silhouette and balances the delicacy and the strength of natural materials, with a particular focus on wool. The result is versatile, timeless pieces that leave room for the person wearing them, and for the layers beneath.
SPECTRUM has always been about outerwear, and that is a conscious choice. Tailoring is a craft that is disappearing in Germany. Most of the production that remains today is geared towards jersey, and workshops that still know how to work with woven fabrics are rare. Birgit works with those who do, and gives the blazer and the jacket their weight back in the wardrobe. Everything is made in small series and released as curated drops and limited editions. Fewer pieces, made better.
THE PATH
Birgit studied fashion design at the Akademie Mode & Design in Hamburg. In 2010, she won second prize at the European Fashion Award FASH with her collection “innen = außen” (“inside = outside”): asymmetric silhouettes modelled by hand on the mannequin, in wool velour, cotton satin and wool jersey. The jury praised her control of volume, body and silhouette, and her craft skill.
In 2011, she founded SPECTRUM. Her experience in the fast fashion industry had shown her what she wanted to do differently: high-quality, lasting clothes, made locally in Germany, with respect for both people and nature. She has worked with natural fibers ever since.
